The new year is upon us, and it's the perfect time to make a resolution for being more proactive with car care in 2025. Today's article is a look at how you can keep your car's air conditioning (A/C) system in top condition, which will be welcome during the upcoming summer months. A well-functioning A/C system not only cools the cabin interior where you and your passengers can enjoy it but also helps to filter out pollutants and humidity.
Here are some tips to keep your car’s A/C in top condition.
The cabin air filter keeps dust, pollen, and other pollutants from entering the vehicle’s interior. A clogged filter restricts airflow and reduces cooling efficiency. Check and replace the cabin air filter according to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule, typically every 12,000 to 15,000 miles.
Even in cooler months, run your A/C for about 10 minutes once a month. This helps maintain the system's lubrication and prevents seals from drying out, which can lead to leaks. If you drive a modern vehicle, you might already be doing this without realizing it. Many vehicles will run the A/C automatically when you defrost your windows because it takes moisture out of the air.
The A/C condenser cools and condenses refrigerant gas from the compressor into a liquid by dissipating heat absorbed from the cabin air. It is typically located in the front of the car and looks like a mini radiator. Regular maintenance includes cleaning the condenser coils to remove dirt and debris, which can hinder heat exchange and reduce efficiency. The area around the condenser should also be clear of obstructions, such as plants or debris, to promote proper airflow. An inspection should also be performed for any signs of wear or damage, such as corrosion (the condenser fins are susceptible to road salt) or refrigerant leaks.
If you aren't comfortable locating and checking the condenser yourself, you can schedule your A/C service in Victoria, BC with Big O Tires (we're near to Colwood and Sidney if you're around those areas). We can assist with a variety of services, including checking the condenser, checking refrigerant levels, and replacing the air filter.
Remember- preventive maintenance is the best way to keep every part of your vehicle at its best. So the next time you're scheduling your oil change, check your owner's manual for other upcoming factory scheduled maintenance and think about other areas of your vehicle that would benefit from service. Many drivers are good at remembering oil changes and tire rotations, but there's more your vehicle needs to run at its best.
Cheers to a better 2025 for you and your vehicle!
